Blow your nose at the table?
Should one blow one’s nose at the table in a restaurant?
If you blow your nose once or briefly dab it, this is not as much frowned upon here in Europe as it is, for example, in China. It is a major gaffe to blow one’s nose in public in China. The Chinese prefer to pull up their nasal mucus, which we deem inconceivable and impolite. But we all agree that it is unappetising immediately before a delicious meal. It is better to go briefly to the bathroom – that is really classy.
We are used to pull out a handkerchief always and everywhere when we have a runny nose. Blowing one’s nose is therefore more or less respected in company. But turn away from the table and blow your nose with the least possible noise. When you have a cold and are forced to use a handkerchief repeatedly, it is a different matter. First of all, only use paper tissues and each time a new one. Secondly, you cannot leave the table and go outside every time. It would be best to cancel the meal.
