Eating with your fingers?
What can be eaten with your fingers in a restaurant?
Finger food includes all foods that can be officially eaten with your fingers, even in a very fine restaurant. Artichokes, for example, are typical finger food. They cannot be tackled with a knife and fork. Apart from artichokes, all types of crustaceans as well as quails and spareribs belong to this category. Asparagus is meantime eaten with a knife and fork.
When a “finger bowl” or a lemon towelette is placed on the table, it is an indication that you can use your fingers. The former is a small bowl with water and a slice of lemon that some guests mistake for a soft drink.
Even when fingers are allowed, do it with style. You should initially try to use cutlery to remove the meat from the bone, but not gnaw on it like a dog. The type of restaurant naturally also plays a role. It is fine to eat French fries with your hands, for example in a fast-food restaurant.
