Refilling a wine glass oneself?

Should a guest refill a wine glass in a restaurant, even though this has been previously done by the waiter?

First of all, try to signal the waiter inconspicuously. It can, indeed, happen, that the waiter is somewhat inattentive when the restaurant is well attended and forgets refilling. But if no service personnel are around far and wide or if they are extremely inattentive, you can refill yourself. This self-service is a compromise solution and tells personnel: “You are not doing a good job”.

The situation is more difficult when you have been invited and the host fails to top up the wine glass. You will have no other choice than to continue sipping at your water glass and hope that the empty wine glasses will be discovered.
